The Grits Blitz 3/25/2013

I’m going to try something new on the site for the foreseeable future. We’re rebranding Pickin’ and Grinnin’ as The Grits Blitz. Think of it as a big helping of daily links for you to consume each morning with your breakfast. I think we’ll go with the tagline “Your daily Atlanta sports news- scattered, smothered, and covered”

OSI OSI OSI, OY OY OY. According to various reports, Osi Umenyiora is expected to sign with the Falcons around the time you read this article. Umenyiora is 31, but still a productive pass rusher if the Falcons can sign him for the right price.

YOUR FRIENDLY REMINDER THAT SPRING STATS ARE (MOSTLY) MEANINGLESS,  brought to you by the guys at Capitol Avenue Club. Hopefully this reminds everyone that being able to hit AAA pitchers is not a guarantee of Major League success. Far more important is watching the development of certain aspects of a player’s game.

LET ME GUESS, HE PLAYED FOR BEAR BRYANT. Bill Battle does indeed fit seemingly the only qualification to be named the new Athletic Director at Alabama. Someday we may see the same requirements placed on Alabama ADs for Battle’s highest-paid employee Nick Saban.

WE NEED A BETTER NAME THAN DUNK CITY but that will have to do for now as a nickname for 15-seed Florida Gulf Coast University. The Eagles defeated San Diego State Sunday night to book their place in the Sweet Sixteen, the first ever 15-seed to do so. There, they will take on the Florida Gators. Stewart Mandel has more:

USA SOCCER IS SNOW BOWL CHAMPIONS defeating Costa Rica in blizzard conditions. The win was much needed for the Americans, who will travel to the dreaded El Azteca stadium to meet rivals Mexico Tuesday.
